KOTA KINABALU: The Government may indefinitely close dive haven Pulau Sipadan to visitors, to allow the regeneration of coral damaged by a barge. On Monday and Tuesday, the barge was ferrying building material and equipment to the island and damaged a section of coral near three popular dive sites: the "Drop-off", "Barracuda Point" and "Turtle Cavern".A RM5 million project to build a central rest area on the island for day-trippers and quarters for park rangers and security forces personnel has been approved by the State Government.
Sabah Parks director Datuk Lamri Ali said a heavy fine would be imposed on the contractor, who has admitted fault and would co-operate in the coral restoration efforts.
That's it? A HEAVY FINE? RESTORATION EFFORTS? Dont they know that it takes years for a coral to grown an inch?????
ANGERSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shite! Is that what the drop-off point looks like now?!!! Noooooooooo!!!!! The state government should be shot and taken to task! What the heck do they mean by "to allow regeneration of the corals"? they thinks it all happens overnite like goreng pisang issit? Effing bureaucrats!
Damn! That's awful!
And I haven't even gone to Sipadan yet. :(
I think some group of divers should collectively write a letter to the press, on this. Seriously.
This is the sort of "non-thinking" that destroys the beauty of our natural environment.
lx and ray - they shoo-ed away the dive and resort operators off the island, and they granted this project to someone to build a rest area and quarters for the park rangers!
question is what actually are they building? if one needs a bulldozer, construction materials and all... it sure is a big project! why cant they use the good ole fashion kayus or just use whats already there, just beautify and maintain the existing facilities.
skooopid! and they didnt allow us to wear gloves for fear we would touch them corals! and yet they allowed this to happen! skoopid!
gotta make noise abt it.
the same thing happened to tioman somewhere last year.
F&G - Tioman aint that bad. It's just the anchor of the barge taht scrapped the coral reef.. Few did make noise and wrote tonnes of articles in the papers for the government to study the need to build an airport in tioman. DOnt know whats the status now but think they're going ahead with the plan despite few environmental experts giving adverse comments. Someone somewhere is making tonnes of money... ;-(
But Sipadan... It's Sipadan for God's sake! I've never seen anything as beautiful as Sipadan in Malaysia. Even Mataking aint as goojas... am upset.. so upset! The drop off is the bestest spot!!! Argh... Why must it happen there??? ;-(
sad sad sad .... those bloody bastards ...
